Realistic base dirt

Postby Tommen » Tuesday 5th February, 2013 4:09 pm

Does anybody know what kind of colours I should be using to make this kind of earthy colour for bases? http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a58 ... 1360076313
The chocolatey brown, bleached-bone drybrush style I used for my 40k stuff doesnt seem to suit this scale so well
Most of the base will be covered in snow, but I want the few exposed areas to look dead good :D

I can't really tell from those photos but I'd recommend against using a pure brown colour - whilst we tend to think in terms of dirt is brown, sky is blue, grass is green, stone is grey etc. colours in real life are rarely that simple.

I've not tried it out but you might try mixing a more greeny/khaki colour like steel legion drab in with some scorched brown or similar dark earth colour and drybrushing it over a black primer, then highlight up by mixing in khaki/beige.
40k: Tau (gothic, AI), Tyranids (NetEpic, gothic), Dark Angels
WFB: Skaven (uncharted seas)
Also Played: Warmachine/Hordes, Infinity, Flames of War
