Gw Digital - Be'Lakor

Postby The Kremlin » Monday 2nd December, 2013 4:23 pm

Anyone seen this yet? Digital advent calendar - new individual releases each day, at a guess.

Currently there are rules for Be'Lakor in both WFB and 40k out. He looks very solid indeed in both - might be actively bent in 40k.

Yeah saw it, he looks rather nice, all the telepathy spells is rather impressive. The new ones for Tau look horrifically powerful, not sure how they are added to your army (whether by just a special formation tax, but take up FOC or are a special ally like Inquisitors, which has terrifying prospects for abuse).

Err, yeah. An extra "free" ally slot with a riptide and 6 broadsides, all of whom gain tank hunters and preferred enemy (space marines): wow GW, that's a cynical way to sell a big box kit before Christmas. Also looks horrendously unbalanced. Please nobody take that.

It won't be too bad outside the alien super friends and co, without the ability to Divinate or Markerlight targets they hit on 4+. With it though it's quite game breaking especially if you spammed them (because you can have more than one).
I toted up the points and a tricked out optimised version of this unit would be coming in at just shy of 900 points, for those points you do get 16 (4 twin-linked) str 5 no LOS needed shots, 28 STR 7 AP4 shots, an Ion Accelerator that can fire at best STR9AP2 Ord large blast shot, Also they all have 2+ armour the Riptide has 2+ 4++ and FNP. So strong as hell but at BS 3 only 50% of those shots are hitting (outside marines), add Divination in or Markerlights and you get a different kettle of fish, with that thing wanting to be dead getting hit on 3 or even 2+ re-rolling 1's and ignoring cover... yeah good luck with that.

Oh.... Just looked up what the points hike is to get Tank Hunters and preferred enemy Space Marines on your units (thinking y'know an elite formation and all gets a hike)... 0, nothing, nada         there might be a chaos rant about us paying premium for everything and Tau getting it for free.....

Oh, indeed, my big worry is a tau player taking it as well as their normal army, really. It costs a lot, but Broadsides and Riptides are very good anyway, and there is no extra cost for those scary abilities. (Similar with Eldar, I suppose, as you say.)

Notably, an Imperial player *could* take it and an Inquisitor or two for Prescience, but given our campaign-focussed metagame I'd not expect anyone to really do that.

(The campaign does skew the metagame quite a bit really. Not a bad thing at all - I love the campaign narrative - but it does alter the odds of playing vs certain armies.)

Well our campaign is generally aimed at armies with few allies - I'm not sure it skews the metagame too much. What *does* is the relative abandance of different armies in our society... Anyway...

For Preferred enemy SM and Tank Hunters as a tau player you need to take 6 broadsides and a riptide... OK, I can see how that might be "restrictive" (at ~900 points it will take up a fair whack of 2000 points). And Mike the "cost" is forcing you to take 2x3 Broadsides... (I'm not sure such a "restriction" is much of a cost...)

However it does seem to be aimed non-tau players. Here is a nice Christmas box :D

It would be perfect for my Librian Guard once they defect. However I'm not sure this formation is as "bad" in a non-tau army! 1100pts of guard + this formation will be good... But not as good as 2000pts of tau... :D

I would worry about a tau player taking this formation... as well as a couple of Riptides and more broadsides... They will end up with a very very boring army which while not unbeatable, will be extremely dull to play (!)

Anyway... We'll see who uses it where.

With Inquisitors it wouldn't make a difference as they are allies of Convenience so they can't cast it on the Tau Detachment. With Mantis Warriors (Space Marines being Battle Brothers with Tau) could with their divination making it a scary prospect, though again that would only be on one of those three units taken (unless they take two Librarians, which, if you're mantis warriors, why the hell wouldn't you?). The big benny is for the TauDar super friends, where markerlights and Divination are already overpowered just got more insane.

Yeah it affects our meta because arguably the best players are with the two strongest factions which makes the campaign somewhat skewed and with the pick up and play variety of gaming it can be possible to play this detachment, but like you if I think someones army is bent beyond belief I just won't play them (unless I had a completely bent list)

Mike that's the way we have always dealt with cheesy armies and people, we just don't play them until they learn.

I am amused however that you're having this 'rant' when there's still 22 days of cheese to go, there's almost certainly time to see some proper beardy stuff ;)

Today's seems to be a "how to use Riptides" tactica, so no rules there.

Time will tell how good Belakor is. Views seem to range between "about on par with the Tzeentch prince people take anyway" and "wow all the Invisibility". The WFB version looks interesting, especially if it can be taken in a DoC army - might be a Daemon Prince worth taking in that list if so. Not 100% sure.

I suppose the Tau formation doesn't make much grand scheme of things difference - you can make a bent army with it, but you can make a bent army with Tau anyway, and the usual responses apply.

Made for conversation though.

And if I take it in my guard, I don't think its particularly broken...

Campaign wise I don't think there is a problem. There are a fair few alliance players though... In fact thats not even a problem! The tau armies have lost games as well as won them... One exception I can think of :D

Storm wing formation was released today. Made up of 1 storm raven and 2 storm talons. Both talons can escort the raven and as long as one talon is alive the raven gets strafing run.
My list just got better.

taking it as a formation as well means that you are freeing up other parts of your list.
